Project 27 continues to grow in ways that reflect both the heart of the music and the vision behind it. As the producer, songwriter, and composer of the EP, Kevin L. Wafford has been shaping every detail of this project from the ground up, and the latest developments show just how far the journey has come.
The first official cover artwork has now been created, and it captures the spirit of the project with a level of power and elegance that sets the tone for everything that follows. The image reflects the atmosphere of worship, the depth of the music, and the excellence that defines the production. It feels like a moment lifted straight from the final showcase, and it represents the standard that Project 27 is committed to delivering.
Behind the scenes, the musical foundation is taking shape. The lineup of vocalists, musicians, and choir members has been confirmed, bringing together some of the most gifted talent in St. Louis. These are artists Kevin has worked with, trusted, and believed in for years, and now they are uniting under one sound to bring the EP to life. Rehearsal notes and arrangement drafts are already underway, and the early direction points toward a body of work that is bold, spiritual, and deeply rooted in the message of Matthew 27.
The lead single, “I Belong to God,” has officially been selected to introduce the project. Written and composed by Kevin, the song carries the same inspiration that sparked the entire EP on Easter morning. It will serve as the anchor for the rest of the music, setting the emotional and spiritual tone for the full release.
The Regional Arts Commission has confirmed its support for the 2027 Holy Week Showcase, ensuring that the community will experience the EP live and free of charge. This showcase will be the moment where the music, the message, and the people behind the project come together in one powerful night.
The donation campaign is now active, giving supporters the opportunity to directly invest in the recording, production, and performance of the EP. Every contribution goes into the music and the people who make it possible. There are no fees, no middlemen, and no wasted resources. The focus remains on honoring the craft, the talent, and the purpose behind Project 27.
Production planning continues to move forward. Studio dates are being finalized, the timeline is taking shape, and preparations are being made to document the journey from the first rehearsal to the final master. Exclusive merchandise inspired by the themes of the EP is also in development, with special editions reserved for Visionary‑level supporters.
As the project advances, the priorities remain clear: finalize the EP artwork, prepare the official cover, organize the Thank You Wall, and shape the Wrap Party experience that will celebrate the completion of the music. Every step reflects the same commitment that started this journey — to create something meaningful, something rooted in faith, and something that represents the spirit of St. Louis with excellence.

Kevin L. Wafford, known musically as KLR 1, is a lifelong musician, composer, and producer whose creative roots trace back to the “Show Me State” of St. Louis, Missouri. He began playing piano at eight years old, studying on and off through college, and later added the flute as his second instrument. During his teenage years, keyboard players were always in demand, giving him the opportunity to perform with a variety of local bands and develop a sound shaped by gospel, jazz, R&B, and classical influences.
As a songwriter, Kevin has been a proud member of BMI since the early 1970s, when his first original composition was recorded, published, and played on the radio. His musical journey has been shaped not only by his own dedication but also by the guidance of world‑renowned drummer and producer James Gadson, whose mentorship left a lasting impact on Kevin’s discipline, musicality, and commitment to excellence. Gadson’s influence helped refine Kevin’s approach to rhythm, arrangement, and the spiritual depth that now defines his work.
Inspired early on by Larry Dunn, the legendary keyboardist of Earth, Wind & Fire, Kevin developed a musical voice rooted in emotion, spirituality, and craftsmanship. His recent work includes the gospel‑jazz composition “Joy,” a reflection of his ability to blend genres while keeping faith at the center of his sound.
Beyond performance and production, Kevin shares his musical gifts with purpose. He teaches piano to students with disabilities and to those with low or no income, believing that access to music can change lives. He also holds a TAI certificate of completion and remains active in the fight against AIDS, using his platform to uplift and advocate for his community.
Today, as the composer and producer of Project 27: Born of the Spirit, Kevin continues to shape music that reflects his journey, his faith, and his commitment to putting God first. His name, KLR 1, stands for Kindness, Love, and Respect, with the “1” symbolizing God’s place at the center of his life and his work.

“THE MINISTRY & THE MISSION”
A Calling That Became a Legacy
The Michael Latchison Singing Ministry (MLSM) was founded in June 1985, when Michael J. Latchison felt led to form a community singing ministry while working at Beaumont High School. What began as a spiritual assignment has grown into the oldest active community gospel choir in the St. Louis Metropolitan area.
For more than 40 years, MLSM has stood as a ministry built on faith, consistency, and a deep commitment to serving people through music.
A Ministry of Firsts
Under Michael’s leadership, MLSM became the first African American choir to minister at:
St. Stanislaus Catholic Church
Christ Prince of Peace Catholic Church
They have also ministered at Powell Symphony Hall for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. celebrations and performed at major citywide events, including the City Wide Gospel Fest at Kiener Plaza.

Kevin L. Wafford, a member of BMI since the early 1970s, has composed three symphonies and over 100 songs. Performing under the name KLR1 — which stands for Kindness, Love, Respect, with “1” symbolizing God first — he continues to build a catalog of music that uplifts and inspires.
Beyond his artistry, Wafford teaches music to students with disabilities or limited income and remains active in advocacy through his initiative Raise The Ribbon Up, founded in 2011 to honor those affected by AIDS.

Kevin L. Wafford: A Multi-Media Visionary BIO
Kevin L. Wafford is a dynamic force in the multi-media entertainment arena, with a career spanning over 25 years in communications and entertainment. His journey began as a musician, but his passion for storytelling and media led him to become an influential entertainment publicist, working with iconic talents like Michael Jackson and MC Hammer. Kevin's philosophy is simple yet profound: take it point by point and step by step, starting small and developing a strategy for each project and career move.
Kevin's entrepreneurial spirit is evident in his ventures. He founded one of the first men of color fashion magazines, "Our Male," and continued to revolutionize men's fashion with his upscale retail store, Pacific Male. His willingness to take risks and step outside the box has been a hallmark of his career.
In television, Kevin's creativity and vision shone brightly. He co-produced the syndicated TV show "N Gear" with veteran executive producer Ehrich VanLowe, known for "The Cosby Show." Hosted by supermodel Tyson Beckford, "N Gear" covered urban lifestyle and fashion, reaching audiences nationwide. Kevin's foray into TV didn't stop there. He also co-produced the TV show "Music Views And Visions" with director Tyrone VanHosen, further cementing his place in the industry.
Kevin's passion for storytelling extends to film. He has written and produced several screenplays, including "Confidential Conversation," "Phases Of The Journey," and "The Puck Off." His latest screenplay, "Morris," co-written with Tyrone VanHoesen, tells the inspiring story of a young blind pianist who refuses to let his handicap control his professional and personal life. Morris, the protagonist, navigates life's challenges with his long-time companion Jason, facing ups and downs as he strives to get through school and earn a place at the prestigious Juilliard School of Music.
Kevin's entrepreneurial spirit is inspired by Sir Richard Branson's words, "No Risk No Reward." This mantra has guided him through various ventures, including producing the first Gospel music CD for the Saint Louis Community College at Forest Park in 2008. He is currently working on his debut Gospel CD, PROJECT GOD1, set to release next year.
Kevin believes in the concept of six degrees of separation but also acknowledges the vastness of the universe. He aims to connect and conquer all corners, step by step. His journey is a testament to his resilience, creativity, and unwavering commitment to his craft.
As Kevin continues to enhance his presence in the multi-media entertainment arena, his focus remains on creating impactful TV and film projects. His journey is far from over, and with each step, he moves closer to his goal of making a lasting impact in the world of entertainment.
